Training in counseling for staff and widows

ACTS works among the most vulnerable individuals in one of the poorest countries in the world—Burkina Faso. Village widows and orphans are the forgotten ones. They have no voice and no means of support. They are considered outcasts due to the fear of AIDS

ACTS counseling and mentoring program will give stability to orphans and prepare them for the stresses of life. ACTS will be able to provide a strong spiritual foundation for re-building the lives of 150 orphans. Orphans will be linked with widows in family-like units. Once the program is in place, it will be an increase of nearly three times the number of orphans ACTS is currently able to assist. The program gives ACTS the ability to target difficulties specific to the needs of neglected and abandoned orphans.

Building infrastructure is necessary to adequately serve the poor. Our orphans have outgrown the dormitories at the Hope Center.

Orphans fall prey to many dangers in Burkina Faso. Child trafficking is increasingly becoming a country-wide problem. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of orphans in the countryside. Even very young children have lived through traumatic experiences. Counseling is integral to the transformation of orphans from hopelessness to being able to envision a productive future.

Joanna Ilboudo received training in counseling for her degree in theology, but found she needed to learn more effective ways to counsel those who had suffered the trauma such as the cases outlined above. Joanna’s training was received in 2012. To insure effective care for orphans, a new Christ-centered program of training needs to be launched for staff and widows.

Orphans are put in programs to reduce malnutrition and to bring them knowledge, but we also need to reduce the tendency for delinquency in orphans. We will use character-building training materials to do this.

These character-building lessons will instill confidence and build character. Staff and widows will be trained in presenting the lessons. The Biblical character traits such as honesty, integrity, goals, humility, forgiveness, dependability, patience, restraint, and devotion to God will be taught to orphans using Bible stories and cultural examples.

ACTS staff and widows qualified to accept orphans into their homes will take a course in basic counseling, character building course, social manners, hygiene and first aid.

ACTS’ church Temple Evangélique el Roï provides spiritual support, counseling and prayer for the orphans. ACTS Hope Center cares for orphans physical, educational and medical needs. We also want to excel in meeting their emotional needs.

ACTS rescues lives from the hands of the enemy and equips them through education and training in righteousness. They are brought out of the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of God.

Our work is to uphold the rights of the oppressed as expressed in Psalm 82:3-4.

Give fair judgment to the poor and the orphan; uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute.
Rescue the poor and helpless; deliver them from the grasp of evil people.
